The history of the city goes back a long way: about a thousand years before Christ, the Illyrians lived here, then the Romans, and in the 7th century. In the 19th century, Croats came here. In the 11th century, Omišalj was an important center of literacy and Glagolitic writing, in the 12th century it was mentioned as Castri musculi (from Latin Ad musculi – place of shells), and in the 15th century, the Frankopan princes of Krk built one of their four castles in it.

Today, Omišalj rightly bears the epithet of a city-monument whose cultural and architectural heritage is extremely rich. This is confirmed by the remains of the Roman city of Fulfinum from the 1st century. century and the early Christian basilica of Mirina from the 5th century. century and numerous other historical monuments.
