Baška is a true stage for active holiday enthusiasts – more than 120 kilometres of well-maintained and marked hiking and trekking trails lead through a landscape where the sea, mountains, karst and stone meet, together with a rich cultural and traditional heritage. Every trail tells its own story, every climb reveals a new panorama, and the diversity of the landscape means that every year you can discover a new and special side of Baška.
This year’s Rocky Hill Hike Tour takes you along the eastern ridge of the Baška Valley, into the heart of Baška’s rugged and fascinating landscape – from historic Jurandvor, across the peaks of Zakam and Diviška, to the otherworldly Moon Plateau. Covering 14.5 kilometres and accompanied by the guides from Anakin Adventures, discover Baška from a completely different perspective.
After gathering in Baška, we head towards Jurandvor, a place that gave Croatian history one of the most important monuments of Croatian literacy – the Baška Tablet. We will visit the complex of the Church of St. Lucy before leaving the historic setting behind and heading towards the mountains.
Through fragrant pine forests, the trail takes us towards Zakam, where the first spectacular view of Baška, the sea, the Church of St. John and the islet of Prvić awaits. Continuing towards Diviška (471 m), the landscape becomes increasingly rugged – rocks, karst, dry-stone walls and old shepherds’ paths lead us towards one of the most distinctive landscapes on the island of Krk.
On the Moon Plateau, bare rock and karst create an almost surreal scene, which is why this place rightly bears its unusual name. The views towards the deep coves of Mala Luka and Vela Luka are an additional reward for the effort of the climb, and with a little luck, you may even spot griffon vultures soaring above us from the nearby Kuntrep Ornithological Reserve.
Along the way, we will also discover traces of the life that has taken place here for centuries – dry-stone walls, ponds and mrgari, unique stone structures that bear witness to the tradition of communal pastures and livestock farming. A particularly special experience awaits at Diviška, beneath the peak of the same name, with its characteristic shepherds’ walls that once divided the area into five sections for watering sheep.
The return to Baška follows the “Path to the Moon”, through pine forests and rocky landscapes, with new panoramic views of the Baška Valley and the sea.
