Franko Tončinić explores the significance of jewelry beyond its aesthetic appeal, delving into its role in nonverbal communication and societal development throughout history. Using olive wood as his medium, Franko’s craftsmanship reflects a deep understanding and respect for materials, resulting in pieces that exude mystery and harmony with nature. Tončinić challenges conventional norms, inviting viewers to consider the multifaceted meanings of jewelry. In addition to jewelry and artistically wearable sculptures, he also crafts beautifully designed walking sticks from olive wood, evoking good old times and guaranteeing quality. Centuries-old wood processing methods demand patience, attention, passion, and above all, time. In today’s world of technology, with its urgencies and haste, Tončinić finds an oasis, uncovering the ancient secret of slow, continuous work and progress. He enters a creative process that transcends time and communicates with the spirits of ancestors. This ancestral spirit manifests in all his creations, especially in masks whose shapes evoke ancient Slavic deities and fairies. Beautiful fairies come to life before us in marvelous semi-concealments: sometimes, we only see eyes or mouths, shoulders, or bare necks. The mask conceals only a part, keeping us alert and interested, enticing us and providing anonymity where we can objectify and/or transcend the wearer. The erotic aspect, emphasized by concealment or deprivation, is highlighted by imaginative transformations of materials, sometimes with extremely dynamic, open, and dynamic lines, and elsewhere with calm and repetitive closed formations. Masking can be a survival strategy. We are all forced to some extent to protect ourselves from external influences by wearing a mask, but by displaying a false identity, we lose the opportunity to connect with others. In his creations Franko Tončinić is entirely honest and authentic; although he creates masks, he doesn’t hide, he does not wear a mask. In addition to jewelry and artistically wearable sculptures, he also crafts beautifully designed olive wood sticks that evoke good old times and guarantee quality. His work conveys messages of tradition, connection, and the importance of slowing down in today’s fastpaced world, advocating for exploration and innovation as pathways to progress. The strength of his work lies not only in its provocativeness or seductiveness but also in the message it carries. His creativity indicates the need for exploration, experimentation, reflection, and innovation as the foundations of progress and the creation of a different reality. His work conveys a message of patience, tradition, and the importance of slowing down, a desire to connect the old and new worlds, humans with nature and God, and to strengthen mutual connections.
